Before & After: Elevating a Movie Poster Design
Wally Jackson and the Probability of Love and Car Accidents is a coming-of-age film by neurodivergent writer-actor Austin Wolff. It’s a fresh perspective on the modern life and love of someone on the autism spectrum. After a successful Indiegogo funding campaign, Austin and his team knew their existing artwork wasn’t going to reach the wider audience they wanted, which is where I came in.
The Objective Was Clear
The film needed an eye-catching poster that highlighted the narrative and unique title. Sometimes a lengthy title like this can be a challenge but we saw it as an opportunity.
So to explore Wally Jackson’s character, we did photoshoot in my studio. I collaborated with Austin and Taylor Foster (the film’s director) to capture poses that represented Wally’s personality.
From there I designed and iterated.
I wanted the new poster to have a bold, legible title on vibrant red background. I included playful math symbols into the title treatment and placed wally on a subtle chalkboard texture. The toy cars playfully depict a car accident and are the motivation for a subtle heart-shaped shadow.
To tie everything together, I wrote the tagline “A Movie About (Mis)calculating True Love.”
The Result
The final poster not only grabs attention but also does justice to the film’s fresh perspective. It’s bright. It’s inviting. And it’s spot-on for the target audience.
